The Chaldean table (1–8, with 9 held sacred and never assigned) values letters by the sound they carry rather than their place in the alphabet. Letters are added to a compound number, then reduced to a root. The compound describes the outer events a name attracts; the root describes its steady character.
Moolank (psychic number) is your birth date reduced to a single digit — how you experience yourself. Bhagyank (destiny number) is the full date reduced — what life demands of you. A name must sit comfortably with both.
Each number is ruled by a graha. Whether your name number helps or fights your birth numbers is decided by the natural friendship, neutrality or enmity between those planets — the same table used when judging a horoscope.
Traditionally a child is named on the eleventh or twelfth day, using one of the four pada syllables of the Moon's nakshatra at birth. Your name's first syllable therefore carries a nakshatra of its own, with its own lord, deity and gana.
